Tree Plantation Project
Project Overview
As part of Rotary’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community service, a tree plantation exercise was carried out at Kotobabi Basic School, Spintex, from 11am to 12:30pm. The initiative forms part of Rotary’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental conservation, improve green spaces, and instill environmental responsibility among young people. The Rotary members present were PP Menon, Club Secretary Chris, Fund Raising Director Kanika and PD Hema.
Objectives
- Enhance the school’s environment through the planting of trees.
- Promote environmental awareness and climate action among pupils.
- Encourage students to appreciate the importance of tree planting and environmental stewardship.
- Support Rotary’s commitment to sustainable community development.
Activities
Rotary members, school authorities, teachers, and students actively participated. Madam Dorcas, the Achimota Forest Officer, visited the school three days before the activity and guided teachers and students on the best locations in the compound for the trees, all of which are shade trees. The seedlings were planted and watered, and an iron mesh was placed around each one to protect it in its early growth. Participants also discussed the importance of trees: improving air quality, combating climate change, preventing soil erosion, and creating a healthier learning environment.
Impact
The project improved the school’s landscape and gave pupils practical knowledge of environmental conservation. By involving the students directly in the planting, it fostered a sense of ownership and responsibility for nurturing the trees to maturity.
Conclusion
The project was a successful and impactful community service initiative. Continued collaboration with the school will help ensure the trees are properly maintained and contribute to a greener, healthier environment for future generations.
